The 2012 KARATE CANADA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS were held this past weekend (March 16 – 18) at the Richmond Olympic Oval in Richmond, BC. Manitoba’s Brittney Lynn Katchin earned the province’s 1st Silver Medal in this sport in women’s Sparring.
Katchin, a 2nd degree black belt who has been training under provincial coach Angelo Mendoza for the last 8 years, won 3 matches against the best female black belts in the country this weekend to earn a spot in the gold medal final against 2 time Canadian Champion and WKF (World Karate Federation) Silver medalist Olivia Grant from Ontario. Last year, Katchin earned Manitoba’s 1st ever medal at Karate Canada Nationals, earning a Bronze medal at the 2011 Karate Canada Nationals in Toronto. Katchin was the only Manitoba athlete invited to participate in Karate Canada’s National Training Camp in Quebec this past February, when she was selected as “Coaches Pick”.
This is a great success story on how Karate Manitoba, as a PSO (Provincial Sport Organization) has been diligently working on developing a world -class competitive Karate program under the umbrella of Sport Canada. This win will solidify Manitoba’s growing presence on the national karate scene as Karate Canada prepares to be a part of the WKF’s (World Karate Federation) bid for Karate to become an Olympic sport at the 2016 Olympics.
